SWAT: A martial arts competition was organised at a college here on Sunday.
Students of different schools of Malakand division participated in the completion organised by SPS College.
Students showcased their martial arts skills, including taekwondo, judo karate and gymnastics.
“Martial arts have multiple benefits for students, but they are very good for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as it helps them improve focus and concentration, be disciplined and gain self-control.
“The activity helps release energy, reduce stress and regulate emotions,” said Farman Ali, a martial arts instructor.
On the occasion, SPS College principal Asghar Ali said educational institutes should not be limited to teaching class activities only, and they should also develop sports skills among students.
“Unfortunately, parents and teachers only focus on enabling students to get high marks, and they do not provide them with healthy physical activities, which are the significant reasons for disfigured bodies of a majority of students, lack of attention and laziness,” he said.
He said excessive use of mobile phones also limited children’s physical activities.
Students said they wanted to participate in sports activities and learn self-defence techniques.
“We are tired of rote learning in the confines of classroom, and also need to get involved in sports and other outdoor activities to stay fresh and healthy,” said Shehryar Khan, a martial arts athlete, and a sixth-grade student.
