LAHORE: Detention of the former President Yahya Khan has been challenged in the Lahore High Court. Preliminary hearing of the writ instituted by Mian Manzar, advocate, started today [July 2]. The court adjourned the hearing for July 5. It called for the para-wise comments from the State on the writ petition. The court also asked the State to file an affidavit giving the whereabouts of the former President. The petitioner begged to point out that no person could be … detained without being publicly tried and punished according to the law. If General Yahya Khan was guilty of treason, mere continued detention was no punishment for him nor was it in any manner commensurate with the enormity of that crime.

However, he submitted that if the former President was innocent, his continued detention was … against human rights. The petitioner prayed that their lordships … direct the State to … produce General Yahya Khan in this court to satisfy it that he was not being detained … in an unlawful manner. — News agencies.

[Meanwhile, the newspaper reported that] Mr Altaf Gauhar resigned yesterday [July 2] as Chief Editor of “Dawn” and other publications of the Herald group.
