US consul general impressed by Pakistan’s cultural diversity

TAXILA: US Consul General Lahore William Makaneole was fascinated by the rich cultural diversity of Pakistan which he witnessed during his visit to various educational institutions as well as Gurdwara Punja Sahib in Hassanabdal on Wednesday.

Talking to reporters at Gurdwara Punja Sahib, Mr Makaneole thanked the Pakistani government for allowing him to visit places of religious and cultural importance.

Responding to a question, he said different cultures and religions were followed in Pakistan today, adding that minorities were pillars of democracy.

He said he was visiting Pakistan to experience the beauty of diversity and unity of the country with its rich cultural heritage.

Earlier upon his arrival, he was received by Assistant Commissioner Hassanabdal Dr Sana Ramchand and head caretaker of the gurdwara, Sardar Kulbeer Singh who presented him the traditional shawl known as Saropa.

The US consul general was briefed on the history, significance and religious importance of Gurdwara Punja Sahib by Dr Sana Ramchand.

He also visited various portions of the gurdwara and saw the rock which has a hand print believed to be of Baba Guru Nanak.

Mr Makaneole stayed in the prayer area and visited the langar khana where he had brunch.

Earlier the American consul general visited Comsats University Attock campus, postgraduate college and the government school in Attock where he interacted with students.
