LAHORE: The Lahore High Court issued notices on Tuesday to the federal government, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and other parties regarding a petition filed by the board’s chief election commissioner challenging his termination.
Justice Muhammad Raza Qureshi, while delivering a verdict on the maintainability of the petition, announced that notices would be served to the respondents for July 20. The petition was also referred to the court of a senior judge who was already handling similar cases.
Senior lawyer Ahmad Shahzad Rana filed the petition, contesting his removal as the chief election commissioner of the PCB. Rana’s counsel argued that the petitioner was dismissed from his position before his tenure was due to expire. In opposition to the petition, an additional attorney general stated that the constitution of the PCB does not specify a fixed tenure for the election commissioner. The attorney argued that since there are no rules regarding the appointment of the chief election commissioner, the incumbent can be removed at any time.
