ISLAMABAD: Retired Lt Gen Abdul Qayyum was elected president of the Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Society (PESS) at its 60th State Council meeting held in Rawalpindi, said a press release on Saturday.

Mr Qayyum, a recipient of Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military), hails from Chakwal district. The general, who remained a member of the Senate from 2015 to 2021 on PML-N’s ticket, was commissioned in the artillery regiment in April 1968.

He retired as a three-star general in January 2004.

He has also served as military secretary to the then prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
