HYDERABAD, Jan 30: Convener of the district council Zafar Rajput here on Monday rejected a move by some members to table anti-Kalabagh dam resolution in the council on the ground that it does not fulfil the criteria laid down in the Sindh Local Council Conduct of Business Rules. The session was adjourned sine die by the convenor.
A member Mehboob Abro rose to draw the attention of the chair to the burning issue of Kalabagh dam and said that it concerns each and every inhabitant of Sindh province and he wanted to move the resolution in the house so that issue could be discussed.
He was supported by Yamin Soomro who, while requesting the chair to allow tabling of the resolution, said that he was not informed about convening of the session although he was living in the city.
Mohammad Ali Gohar also rose on a point of order and argued that the issue had been discussed threadbare at the provincial as well as at the national level by almost every political party.
He urged his colleagues to adhere to provisions of the Sindh Local Government Ordinance and framework of the council relating to grassroots level issues.
He further said that chief of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement had secured a guarantee from the president that the project would not be constructed without allaying fears of the people of Sindh.
Zahida Memon also called for recording her protest over Kalabagh dam through adopting a resolution against it.
Mr Mehboob Abro pointed out that the provinces had expressed their apprehensions because millions of people would be deprived of water if the project is constructed over the Indus.
He said that such resolutions were passed in Nawabshah and other district councils of Sindh. He stated that government had not given up the project and it had recently announced that project would be built.
Rashid Khan also disagreed with the contention of members intending to move resolutions and said that council members should be committed to the objectives for which they had been elected by people.
Mohammad Ehsan reminded the chair that his resolution on the similar issue had not been allowed by the chair because the issue related to national and provincial assemblies.
