KARACHI: A fruit trader was shot dead by suspected robbers over resistance on Northern Bypass on Thursday afternoon, according to the Gulshan-i-Maymar police.

They said that Noman Naseer, 45, was gunned down at Sawan Cut near Ahmed Brohi Goth.

SSP-West Faisal Bashir Memon said the victim was a fruit trader having his business in Sabzi Mandi. He was travelling in a car when attacked by armed men riding a motorcyle while it was passing through a muddy road. The police said that the suspected robbers signalled him to stop the car but he tried to accelerate the speed to dodge them. The suspects opened fire on him and fled without looting him, they added.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound on his heart which proved fatal.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

The police said that assistant sub-inspector Mohammed Aslam, 55, posted at the Anti-Vehicles Lifting Cell Korangi and the citizen, Abdul Ghaffar, 50, were shot and injured by firing of unknown suspects near Football ground. The police said the motive could not be ascertained immediately. The injured persons were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

IGP rewards police party

Sindh IGP Ghulam Nabi Memon on Thursday gave away cash reward and appreciation certificates to the Korangi Awami Colony police for demonstrating courage by killing two suspected robbers in an encounter. The ceremony was held at the CPO office.

The alleged robbers had taken a woman and an old man hostage at gunpoint inside a Dow university laboratory during a robbery.

The police gave a safe passage to the suspects on their demand when they opened fire on them. They, however, opened fire in self-defence to kill both the suspects. The police action was appreciated by local residents.

One policeman, who was wounded in the encounter, was admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Separately, Additional IGP Javed Alam Odho also announced a cash reward for the policemen.
