GUJAR KHAN: Four labourers died after falling unconscious during the excavation of a well in Dora Badhal area of Gujar Khan on Sunday morning.

According to local sources, the workers lowered a petrol-run electricity generator into the deep well for lighting when smoke started accumulating inside, leading to their suffocation.

Talking to Dawn, the in-charge of Rescue 1122 in Mandra Mohammad Usman said a call was received at 9:45am that two workers had fallen unconscious while digging a well in Dora Badhal area and teams were dispatched for the rescue operation.

He said while the Rescue 1122 teams were on their way, two persons who were assisting the exercise went down the well to rescue the already fainted persons and also got affected by the emission.

Mr Usman said three people were rescued by his teams while one person was shifted to a hospital privately.

Mr Usman said the victims were shifted to Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital Gujar Khan in a critical condition but could not survive.

He identified the victims as Mohammad Ramzan, 40, Wahab Aziz, 26, Jameel Afsar, 21,who were the residents of Adrah Khurd village, and Mohammad Naseer, 40, a resident of Kakh Badhal village.

In another incident, a boy was killed due to electrocution in Dina in the district of Jhelum on Sunday morning.

According to the rescue sources, Zafran, 15, was cleaning a pedestal fan at his home when he received an electric shock and died on the spot.
