BAHAWALPUR: The teachers, students and employees of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) staged a rally from the old campus to the University Chowk on Monday.

The rally participants carried a number of banners and placards inscribed with various slogans. They demanded curbs on narcotics and sexual harassment on the university campus.

According to an IUB press release, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Naveed Akhtar said the IUB’s teachers, employees and students came forward for the sanctity and respect of their institution. They sent a message to the world that the IUB was an institution of international standards.

The press release claimed that the rally was aimed at projecting a positive image and sanctity of the university.

marriage: The Rescue 1122 Lodhran on Monday helped a young man have his marriage despite flood in his village and the village of the bride.

According to Rescue 1122 Lodhran Media Coordinator Muhammad Safdar, the rescuers, led by their district chief Dr Syed Majid Ahmed and AC Lodhran Ashraf Saleh, set an example by extending assistance to Arslan (20) solemnise his marriage as his village, Basti Jageer Hora, was surrounded by the floodwater from river Sutlej.

The rescuers took the wedding procession of Arslan in their boat across the floodwater to Jageer Kukri in the riverine area from Lodhran village on the Bahawalpur side.

According to a press release, the rescuers waited for over five hours till the completion of all the wedding rituals and brought the groom and the bride back to the former’s village in their boat. The groom and his father expressed their gratitude with the rescuers and the AC Lodhran.

ACCIDENT: A man was killed while two suffered injuries in a car accident at Basti Islamabad near Chowk Bhatta near Uch Sharif.

The Rescue 1122 identified the deceased as Umar Wadda and the injured as Muhammad Akmal and Rasheed. They said four men were riding in a mini-car and they were under influence when the car rammed into a roadside tree. Before the arrival of the rescuers at the scene, one of the riders, Umar, had died while two received serious injuries. The fourth rider fled before the arrival of rescuers.

The injured were shifted to Tehshil Headquarters Hospital Ahmedpur East where their condition was stated to be serious.
