HYDERABAD: Over one hundred dehs in Dadu and Thatta districts have so far been inundated by the River Indus, rendering nearly 1.10 lakh people homeless, it was reported here today [Aug 8]. Ninety thousand people in 63 dehs of Dadu district and 20,000 persons belonging to 40 dehs in Talukas Ghorabari, Thatta and Shah Bunder of Thatta district have suffered the ravages of the river. However, no loss of life was reported from any affected area.

Reports from Thatta revealed that banana planted over 300 acres as well as vegetables cultivated over a vast area were washed away by the flood waters. … However, the water level and discharge at Sukkur recorded a fall. The Indus at Kotri Barrage today registered rise by three inches. …

Agency reports add: According to a report received in Hyderabad, the swirling flood waters caused a wide breach in a protective bund near Petaro, 13 miles from Hyderabad last evening, submerging a large tract of land across the railway line. The water … was gushing through the breach, and Irrigation authorities were making efforts to build a loop bund to protect the Indus Highway. — Staff Correspondent
