SWAT: A jirga was held on Thursday to discuss the development of Dhesan meadows into a proper tourist destination.
The participants included local elders led by Malik Ghazan as well as officials of the Upper Swat Development Authority (USDA).
Dhesan meadows are nestled between Kalam and Utror valleys unveiling an enchanting expanse adorned by the majestic mountains and endless emerald carpet, according to them.
Officials said tourists visited Swat every year in large numbers with Kalam valley being their favourite place.
“Kalam has numerous tourist sites from meadows to waterfalls to cedar forests to lakes, so it cannot be explored in a few days. Majority of tourists stay in Kalam Bazaar and go to different locations,” USDA deputy director Sardar Zeb told elders from Kalam and its outskirts.
He said the meadows were a priceless gift of nature and if leaders of all areas agreed to develop it as a proper tourist site and cooperate with the USDA in that respect, it would benefit all.
“Dhesan meadows are a jewel of our valley where a few tourists, mostly hikers and trekkers, can go. It is hidden from the mainstream tourists, so it should be open to all visitors,” he said.
The official said it was time to introduce meadows to all visitors to Kalam and Swat.
“The meadows will not only be an amazing tourist site but it will also enable locals to earn their livelihood,” he said.
Mr Zeb said the vast and charming meadows had the capacity to “accommodate” hundreds of visitors.
“With the consent of local elders, camping pods, roads and other facilities will be provided for the accommodation of tourists,” he said.
The official said owing to the immense natural beauty, the area would not only become a tourist site for both Pakistanis and foreigners.
The local elders appreciated initiatives saying they will promote tourism in Kalam. They, however, said they needed time for consultation with the community for response to the proposal.
