GILGIT: A tourist from Punjab was killed during a robbery attempt near the high-altitude Babusar Pass on Sunday evening, police officials said.

This was the third reported robbery incident this season near the site, located in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Diamer SP Ayaz Ahmed told Dawn the incident happened when a car with six occupants, including one tourist from Lahore and five locals, was en route to Islamabad from Skardu via Babusar Pass road.

The robbers first attempted to intercept the car by hurling stones, but when the driver didn’t stop, they opened fire. A bullet hit Haji Muhammad Rashid, a professor, who was sitting in the front seat. Mr Rashid later died of wounds.
