KARACHI: Two square meals a day and food for babies, drinking water, medical aid and disease prevention are the most urgent needs of about 2,000 flood-affected persons from Khanpur, Rahimyar Khan, Liaquatpur, etc. who have sought refuge in this City. The 400 families have been camped near Landhi Cattle Colony and behind the Cantonment Railway Station.
While 1,600 persons have been placed under a huge railway shed behind the Cantonment station, the remaining 400 persons have been crammed into 24 single-room apartments of the unfinished multi-storey flats being built by KDA under the Industrial Labour Housing Scheme in Landhi Cattle Colony zone. The people living in the railway shed have put up bed sheets etc … for sake of privacy. Water is available in abundance, while the food is being supplied by the Railway Labour Union. The Railway Hospital nearby attends to the ill.
However, till yesterday [Aug 25] no political party or social welfare organisation had so far taken the pain to put up a centre to provide other relief supplies to these flood-stricken people. The Railway Labour Union had also tried to maintain a record of the camping families. …
