KHYBER: The district administration on Friday seized 300 kilogrammes of sugar from different vehicles near the Torkham border while trying to smuggle the commodity to Afghanistan.

A statement issued from the Khyber House said assistant commissioner Irshad Ali Momand and additional assistant commissioner Rameez Ali Shah carried out snap checking of a number of vehicles on the road to Torkham and recovered the sugar from their secret cavities.

It said the sugar was brought from Peshawar markets and then kept in ware houses in Bacha Maina area, from where it was to be smuggled to Afghanistan through different routes.

The statement said the district administration would continue crackdown on sugar smugglers to control its illegal trade to Afghanistan in order to overcome the commodity’s shortage in local markets.
