SWABI: Three men and a girl suffocated when the former tried to save the latter after she fell into a well at a refugee camp here on Wednesday, Rescue 1122 officials said.

They said that the incident occurred in Gandaf refugee camp situated in Topi tehsil, adjacent to the Gadoon Amazai Industrial Estate.

Saqib Shah, a rescue official, said soon after receiving information from the control room, an emergency medical team with two ambulances and a disaster team with a rescue vehicle were immediately dispatched to the site of the incident.

Narrating the incident, Khunjarab Khan, an Afghan, told Dawn on phone that a man jumped into the well after her daughter fell into it to save her. Later, two other neighbours also jumped into the well to save them, but they all died after inhaling poisonous gas.

The rescue teams retrieved all the four people from the well and shifted them to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, Topi, where the doctors pronounced them dead.

The victims were identified as Kamal Azan, 65, his daughter Amarzia, Amin Jan, 23, and Syed Gul, 24.
