KARACHI: Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi said on Sunday that all political parties will have complete freedom to participate in the general elections.

During his speech at Radio Pakistan Karachi, he emphasised that, as per the Constitution, the country’s affairs would be run by its elected representatives.

“State media should not support or oppose any political party,” Mr Solangi said.

The minister issued directives to the official media, urging them to provide fair coverage to registered political parties.

Mr Solangi reiterated that it was the responsibility of the caretaker government to provide a conducive environment for transparent elections.

Earlier, he announced that comprehensive assistance, including resources, administrative support, and security, would be provided to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to conduct the general elections within the specified timeframe.

He added that the ECP was responsible for ensuring a level-playing field for all political parties.

The ECP announced that general elections would be held in the last week of January.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) welcomed the ECP’s decision, stating that the announcement would put uncertainty to an end.

The PPP had repeatedly urged the ECP to hold the general election within 90 days and announce the date and schedule immediately.

Digital technology

The caretaker minister stated that the government was making efforts to address the broadcasting needs through digital technology. He also announced that Digital Radio Mondiale would soon be introduced in the country.

Mr Solangi expressed his commitment to addressing radio-related issues within the framework of legal and constitutional powers.

He assured that he would dedicate his available time to resolving these problems. The minister emphasised his vision for Radio Pakistan to meet the demands of the modern age.

Mr Solangi said the Radio Pakistan board would be reconstituted. “I consider it my duty to improve the organisation’s affairs.”
