CHICAGO: Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum shattered the men’s marathon world record in Chicago on Sunday, winning in two hours and 35 seconds to beat compatriot Eliud Kipchoge’s previous mark by more than 30 seconds.

Kiptum shattered the London Marathon course record this year.

Kiptum broke the tape three minutes and 27 seconds ahead of compatriot Daniel Mateiko while Belgian Bashir Abdi finished third in 2:04:32.

Later on Sunday, Dutch star Sifan Hassan won the women’s marathon title in an unofficial time of two hours, 13 minutes and 44 seconds the second-fastest women’s time in marathon history.

The 30-year-old Ethiopian-born runner set a course record. Her time was second only to the women’s world record of 2:11:53 set by Ethiopian Tigist Assefa at last month’s Berlin Marathon.
