QUETTA: The caretaker Balochistan cabinet has approved the formation of an information commission to ensure the right to information under Article 19-A of the Constitution.

Addressing a press conference after the cabinet meeting on Monday, Balochistan caretaker Information Minister Jan Achakzai said under Article 19-A, the right to information was “a fundamental right of every citizen”.

They have the right to seek information about matters of public importance in line with reasonable restrictions imposed by law.

Mr Achakzai said the assembly has already approved the Right of Information Act, but the absence of a commission was a hurdle in implementing the law.

“Three members and chairman of the RTI commission would be announced in a couple of days to complete the implementation of the Act,” he said.

The cabinet meeting, presided over by caretaker Chief Minister Mir Ali Mardan Domki, also approved Rs780 million to clear Quetta Electric Supply Company’s (Qesco) outstanding dues with the condition that it would restore power supply in Balochistan.

“The payment will be made to Qesco after that power supply to all areas is restored where it was cut over non-payment of dues,” Mr Achakzai said.

The cabinet also took notice of inflation, the minister said, adding that transporters and traders have not reduced fares and prices despite the reduction in petroleum products prices.

“The cabinet has ordered district administrations to take immediate steps for ensuring prompt relief for people.”

Replying to a question about the labourers killed in Turbat, he said the attackers “will be taught a lesson”.
