BAHAWALPUR: The Vehari police claimed on Monday to have killed in a police encounter another suspect wanted in over 32 cases of heinous crime, including dacoities and murders, registered in different police stations in the district.

According to Vehari district police spokesman, a police party was taking the arrested suspect, Manzoor, for the recovery of booty, when it was attacked by his four armed accomplices near Rasoolpur Adda.

The police claimed that the assailants opened fire on the policemen in a bid to free Manzoor, which was returned, ensuing a crossfire.

The spokesman said that during crossfire Manzoor was killed by the firing of his own accomplices, who managed to flee from the scene.

A case against the fleeing attackers has been registered and police are trying to arrest them, he concluded.

On Sunday, Luddan police claimed to have killed a proclaimed offender, Irfan Sahoo, in an alleged encounter.

ARRESTED: Mitroo police in Vehari district arrested a seminary teacher for alleged torture of a student Majid Sultan.

As per FIR No.714/23, registered on the complaint of Jabir Sultan under sections 328-A and 342 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) against the teacher, Qari Tahir.

The complainant said his younger brother, Majid Sultan, a student at the seminary, was allegedly tortured with clubs and kept in illegal confinement by Qari Tahir.

The police arrested the suspect and started investigation.

WOMAN DIES: A woman, Ms Aalia (45) died, while four others, including three women suffered serious injuries when the rickshaw in which they were travelling overturned at Sutlej toll plaza near the city.

HOCKEY LEAGUE: The South Punjab Inter-district Hockey League (boys and girls), 2023 began at Motiullah Khan Hockey Stadium here on Monday.

The sports event was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Zaheer Anwar Jappa is being participated in by six boys and as many girls teams from different district of south Punjab.

In the opening match of the event, that will continue till Oct 18, Rahim Yar Khan (girls) team defeated Layyah’s by 1-0.
