ISLAMABAD: In a move aimed at strengthening diplomatic and academic ties, the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) is set to inaugurate the ‘Asean Corner’ on Monday (today).

According to a statement, caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani and a group of Asean envoys will attend the inaugural ceremony.

The establishment of the Asean Corner at the ISSI was testament to fostering closer partnerships between Pakistan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). This initiative was a result of a collaborative effort between the ISSI and the Asean Committee in Islamabad (ACI) following their structured interaction in January this year.

The statement said Asean and Pakistan shared a longstanding and growing relationship, underpinned by economic cooperation and regional stability.

Pakistan’s strategic location, serving as a bridge between South Asia and the Middle East complemented Asean’s emphasis on trade and connectivity across diverse regions.

Their partnership extended across various sectors, including industry, investment, agriculture, education, science and technology, tourism and counter-terrorism efforts, reinforcing their commitment to economic development and regional security.

In the ever-evolving geopolitical landscape, the partnership between Asean and Pakistan remained essential for promoting peace and prosperity in the Asian region. Despite the geographical distance, Asean and Pakistan had nurtured a strong and mutually-beneficial relationship over the years.

Pakistan’s ‘Vision East Asia’ policy signified its determination to enhance cooperation with Asean across various fields. In return, association regarded Pakistan as a significant partner in its external relations.

The statement said the inauguration of the ‘Asean Corner’ at the ISSI held great importance and researchers, academics, scholars and practitioners could utilise these resources to deepen their understanding of the region and propose ideas for broader and more substantive engagement.

Following the inauguration, a roundtable discussion titled ‘Forging Partnerships: Exploring the Future Prospects of Pakistan-Asean Relations’ would be organised by the ISSI’s China Pakistan Study Centre (CPSC).

The event will bring together high-level diplomats from Asean, senior Pakistani officials and business representatives. The objective was to provide a platform for academics and practitioners to analyse Pakistan’s evolving ties with Asean and offer insights into regional challenges and opportunities.
