The colder temperatures have an impact on both physical and mental well-being. While cold weather doesn’t directly cause a cold, the viruses responsible for colds may spread more easily in lower temperatures. Therefore, we need to cope with several seasonal health challenges that are all too common.
Let’s explore these seasonal illnesses and discover some solutions to stay healthy and comfortable during the winter chill.
The common cold: There is no doubt that washing one’s hands is key to staying away from most seasonal illnesses. In previous years, Covid-19 taught us the significance of regularly washing hands and using hand sanitiser to ward off the spread of the virus, because the most common way to catch a cold is by coming into contact with someone who already is infected.
You can boost your immune system by eating vitamin-rich foods like citrus fruits, berries and leafy greens. Also having a warm bowl of chicken soup works wonders, it’s not just comforting; it works! The common cold may accompany:
Sore throat: Some of you may still be drinking cold water and might even sneak out to get ice creams or any chilly drink. Now, the not-so-fun part comes the next day when you wake up and your throat feels like it’s got tiny prickles inside. It’s what we call a sore throat. It’s the most irritating thing as it makes eating and drinking the hardest job in the world.
The solution: Try drinking warm water, tea or Joshanda (herbal tea); and slurp up some hot soup. And yes, steer clear of those spicy and oily treats for a little while. Your throat will appreciate the warmth and soon you’ll be back to enjoying your favourite snacks with a happy, healthy throat!
Runny nose, coughing, sneezing: It is very easy to catch the cold and flu from someone. Using a mask is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs through coughing, sneezing, or even talking.
Always keep tissue papers in your pocket for these situations. You’ll need one to cover your mouth and prevent the spread of germs to others. Taking care of your hygiene should be your top priority. It is advisable to get a flu shot.
High temperature, muscle aches, headaches: If the common cold becomes severe, you may experience these symptoms. Always seek advice from the doctor and ensure you get ample rest while taking proper medication.
Dehydration: We all know that in winter, we don’t feel as thirsty as we do in the summer. But staying well-hydrated, by drinking plenty of water and consuming hydrating foods, your body will get the strength it needs to combat various infections. Keep a water bottle with you and sip from it throughout the day.
Dry skin dilemmas: Of course, winter isn’t kind to our skin. Almost all of us combat dryness by using lotions and moisturiser regularly. Prefer warm over hot showers, as hot showers can strip your skin of its natural oils. Again, keeping your body well-hydrated is the key. Your skin will thank you!
Winter brings its share of challenges, but with a few simple steps, you can keep those seasonal sicknesses at bay. Embrace healthy habits, stay well and enjoy the wonders of the season!
