BAJAUR: Gunmen attacked the vehicle of an independent candidate in Nawagai tehsil here on Monday, killing his cousin and injuring his brother, the police said.

A police official told Dawn that the incident occurred in a hilly area.

He added that Syed Raheem Shah alias Sabawoon along with his cousin, Haleem Said and a brother, was going to Kamngara area when his vehicle came under fire.

The official said Haleem and Raheem Shah’s brother were injured in the firing, and were taken to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, Nawagai.

However, he added that Haleem later succumbed to injuries in the hospital.

The official said condition of the injured was out of danger.

He said Raheem Shah was an independent candidate from PK-19.

Meanwhile, a source in the police said Mr Shah along with his cousin and a brother, belonging to Gabari area of Mamond tehsil, was visiting his mineral mining site in the mountainous area when some people from his rival group attacked his vehicle.

The source added the Nawagai police registered a case against five suspects on the complaint of Qamar Ali Shah, a brother of the deceased.

However, he said no arrest was made till Monday night.
