KARACHI: An official of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) was shot dead in a suspected targeted attack near the Quaid’s mausoleum on Friday, police said.

Jamshed Quarters SHO Imtiaz Husain Shah said 59-year-old Faheemul Hasan was returning his home in the Tariq Road area on a motorcycle after performing night duty at around 10am when some unknown assailants, also on two-wheelers, intercepted him near Peoples Chowrangi on New M.A. Jinnah Road, opened fire on him and rode away.

He was taken to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi where he was declared dead.

The police registered a case under Section 302 (intentional murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of victim’s elder brother Nadeemul Hasan, who is also a retired official of the KWSC.

The complainant said that his brother had four houses — three in Liaquatabad and one in Tariq Road.

East SSP (Investigation) Ameer Saud Magsi told Dawn that investigations were still at an initial stage.

However, Jamshed SP Aleena Rajpar told the media that it did not appear to be a robbery-related incident as the victim’s cell phone and other valuables were not taken.

“The victim was involved in sale, purchase of property,” she said, adding that his brother had told the police that the victim had filed a case against ‘illegal construction’ of a building in Liaquatabad against some builder and was also facing ‘threats’ over it.

Meanwhile, caretaker Chief Minister retired Justice Maqbool Baqar took notice of the killing and directed police to arrest the killers as soon as possible.
