WASHINGTON: All but two Democrats in the US Senate have decided to endorse a measure supporting the creation of a Palestinian state as part of a national security package.

Led by Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii, 49 out of 51 Democrats say they will sign onto an amendment declaring support for a Palestinian state, emphasising the long-standing US policy in favour of a two-state solution.

This move is seen as a rebuke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent rejection of Palestinian statehood.

The amendment reaffirms US policy, stating support for a negotiated solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict resulting in two states living side by side in peace and security.

The measure’s co-sponsors represent a broad spectrum of the Senate Democratic caucus, ranging from Bernie Sander, a vocal Israel critic, to Kyrsten Sinema, a centrist.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said: “Peace in the region requires a two-state solution, with Israel and a Palestinian state coexisting side by side with security, prosperity, and dignity.”

The United States, he added, “must continue to be a leader on the world stage to forge a path forward for a two-state solution as we strive for stability in the Middle East”.

Senator Ben Cardin, who chairs the Senate’s foreign relations committee, said: “Israel’s security depends on a negotiated two-state solution, and the US will work with partners for a secure and prosperous future.”

He stated the United States had always stood by this policy, and “we will continue to work with our partners to ensure a secure and prosperous future for both Israelis and Palestinians”.

Patty Murray, president pro tempore of the Senate, said: “A two-state solution is the only path to lasting peace; rejecting the prospect of a Palestinian state denies their rights, dignity, and self-determination.”

Patty Murray, who also chairs the powerful Senate appropriations committee, underlined the need to “continue working to deliver much-needed humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza”.

“The US government supports a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians to live in safety and dignity, reaffirming our commitment to that vision,” said Senator Brian Schatz while initiating the move.

Respect for human rights

Senator Chris Van Hollen, who wants to link US military assistance to respect for human rights, said: “The best hope for lasting peace is a viable two-state solution, and the US must lead this effort along with the normalisation of relations between Arab states and Israel.”

Senator Thomas Carper, who represents President Joe Biden’s home state of Delaware, said: “A critical moment for the US to continue to lead on the world stage and reiterate commitment to enduring peace through a two-state solution.”

Democrats concerned about the Gaza crisis have proposed multiple amendments to the national security bill focused on preserving human rights in the region.

Senators Van Hollen and Bernie Sanders are among those who are working on amendments related to ensuring US military aid complies with international law.

This development underscores the complex nature of the Palestine issue, with US lawmakers actively engaging in discussions and proposals to address the ongoing tensions.
