KARACHI, March 1: Fancied Army and Wapda lived up to their top billing to retain the men and women trophies in the 40th National Athletic Championship which concluded at the National Sports Training and Coaching Centre on Tuesday.

The soldiers secured 13 gold, nine silver and 10 bronze medals to amass 188 points and retain the men’s trophy. Wapda totalled 158.5 points from seven gold, 10 silver and eight bronze medals to finish as runners-up.

Despite getting a tough time from Pakistan Steel, Wapda went on to retain the women’s trophy. They secured seven gold, 10 silver and nine bronze medals to top the table with 131 points.

Pakistan Steel fetched nine gold, six silver and one bronze to settle for second place with 103 points.

The three-day meet also threw new ‘Fastest Man’ and ‘Fastest Women’ athletes. The Fastest Man award went to Army’s Mohammad Shahbaz who won the 100 metres dash in 10.7 seconds.

Nasim Hameed, also of Army, became the ’Fastest Woman’ winning the short sprint in 12.5 seconds.

Wapda’s Sarfraz Khan covered himself with glory winning the 1500 metre in a time of 4 minutes 2.5 seconds outpacing his teammate Ghulam Ilyas and Army’s Anjum Iqbal.
