KARACHI: The egg price has registered a steep fall of Rs100 to Rs320-330 per dozen in the last week.

During the winter season, consumers had paid Rs420-430 per dozen or Rs35 per egg which continued to prevail till the last week. Surprisingly, neither the federal nor the provincial government had taken any steps to control skyrocketing egg rates.

A poultry wholesaler said that the prices had been on a downward trajectory due to sliding demand on account of a change in the weather system.

He said poultry is the only item whose price fluctuates on demand and supply situation as prices of other items especially beef and mutton never fall.

In peak winter, a short supply could not match with high demand for eggs. Besides, many poultry farmers had stayed away from the egg business after facing losses last year, he added.

When asked why the poultry rates continued to remain high, he said farmers remained a bit reluctant to produce more poultry birds this year after facing losses last year due to high production costs.

He said chicken rates would fluctuate by Rs25-50 per kg due to thin supplies from the farms amid high demand during the ongoing peak marriage season ahead of Ramazan.
