CHITRAL: The Chitral tehsil municipal administration workers called off their strike here on Saturday after the provincial government released an additional grant to the civic body for payment of their salary.

The workers had been on a strike for after 50 days over non-payment of their salary for last five months and firewood allowance for last two years.

The TMA’s sanitation staff resumed work and removed garbage dumps from the collection points situated across the town, bringing relief to residents as the roads and streets were strewn with the rubbish accumulated during the weeks’ long strike.

TMA labour association’s president Afzal Khan while calling off the strike, told mediapersons that the provincial government had approved additional grant for the clearance of workers’ dues.

He said despite Saturday being the holiday, the sanitation staff started work to clear debris in the city. He urged the government to financially strengthen the TMA so workers got their salary on time.

Tehsil municipal officer Rehmat Hanif Khan told Dawn that an amount of Rs50 million had been released for payment of salary to over 140 workers.
