SWABI: The police arrested Awami National Party activist and Pakhtun Student Federation’s former provincial general secretary Azeem Khan Yousafzai during a midnight raid on his house in Dagai village of Razaar teshil on Tuesday.

An official at the Swabi police station, where the ANP worker was lodged after his arrest, told Dawn that an FIR had been registered against him for raising slogans against the state institutions during a party’s public gathering on Tuesday.

He said the FIR was registered against him on an application submitted by Anwar Ali, a resident of Kunda village. He said the complainant stated that Azeem used offensive language against the state institutions during the gathering held at Karnal Sher Khan Chowk.

The complainant said such ‘derogatory’ language was not acceptable to any patriotic citizen, and hurt their feelings. The police official said the complainant sought action against the ANP worker as per the law.

Meanwhile, sources in both the police and ANP said senior civil judge Badar Munir Khan ordered his release on bail.

It is to mention here that ANP leaders and workers indulged in intense sloganeering against the state institutions (establishment) for what they said rigging the elections and manipulating the poll results.

When contacted, ANP district general secretary Nawabzada said Mr Azeem had been released on bail.
