LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has directed that the schools and colleges will hold at least one period in a week to educate students on the usefulness of rooftop gardening, environmental issues and the danger regarding heat.

“This direction shall be conveyed by the learned member to all the colleges and schools,” Justice Shahid Karim said in a written order of the previous hearing on petitions about smog.

A member of a judicial commission told the court that a campaign to plant trees in colleges and schools had been extended throughout Punjab. He said rooftop gardening was also in full swing.

The judge directed the LWMC to hold a meeting of the board in order to take a decision regarding imposition of fines on a person guilty of littering.

He instructed an additional advocate general to also seek a report from the Cantonment Board as well as DHA regarding operation of recycling plants at the petrol pumps, which became dysfunctional.

The judge directed that different clubs in Lahore as well as parks and gardens being maintained by the PHA shall be irrigated by sprinkling system.

A counsel for the PHA submitted a report regarding plantation of trees on the canal as well as newly-constructed Shahdara flyover.

Justice Karim directed the PHA to coordinate with the irrigation department for formulation of a policy regarding desilting of Lahore Canal so that in future, trees may not be cut down during the process and coordinated operation may take place.
