LAHORE: In a recent proposal, Punjab Tourism Secretary Raja Jahangir Anwar has recommended transforming Chakwal into the first tourist destination in Punjab. This suggestion comes as part of a broader effort to promote tourism and explore the untapped potential of various regions in the province.

According to a press release, Chakwal, a district located in the heart of Punjab, boasts of a rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes and a vibrant local community. Despite these attractions, the district has yet to fully capitalise on its tourism potential.

Raja Jahangir Anwar believes that by developing Chakwal as a tourist destination, the region can’t only boost its economy but also create new opportunities for local residents.

The proposal includes a comprehensive plan to develop Chakwal’s infrastructure, promote its cultural heritage and enhance its tourism offerings. This plan includes the development of new tourist attractions, such as hiking trails, historical sites and cultural centres. Additionally, the proposal suggests improving transportation links to make it easier for visitors to access the region. Surrounding Chakwal, there are several tourism potential zones that could be developed in tandem with the local administration to create a larger tourism circuit. These zones include the Salt Range, which is known for its unique geological formations and historical significance, and the Katas Raj Temples, a complex of several ancient Hindu temples.

Mr Anwar has emphasized the importance of community involvement in the development of Chakwal as a tourist destination. He has called for collaboration between the government, local businesses and residents to ensure that the region’s tourism potential is fully realised.

The press statement says the proposal to make Chakwal the first tourist destination in Punjab presents an exciting opportunity to showcase the region’s beauty and heritage. With the right investments and planning, Chakwal has the potential to become a must-visit destination for tourists from around the world.
