LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Friday ordered the Punjab environment protection department to shut down the plants burning rubber tyres as fuel in the province.

Hearing environment-related petitions, Justice Shahid Karim also directed the department to disconnect electricity connections of the factories and industrial units if found involved in causing air pollution.

The judge further asked the director general of the department to submit suggestions to curb crop stubble burning. He remarked that the government should provide maximum super seeds to the farmers.

POULTRY: A member of a judicial commission told the court that dead chicken meat was being openly sold in Lahore.

He said over 10,000 chickens arrived in the city daily, and the dead ones were also being sold. He said the terms “cold chicken” and “hot chicken” were used for dead and alive (slaughtered) chickens, respectively.

The commission suggested that there should be separate slaughterhouses for chicken and red meat.

Justice Karim sought the government’s suggestions on the matter and adjourned the hearing till March 29.
