Uproar in Larkana council meeting

LARKANA, March 10: A pandemonium erupted in Friday’s session of the district council when pro-government members and opponents of the government started shouting slogans against each other.

Badar Abbasi tabled a resolution condemning the sacrilegious caricatures and called for its unanimous adoption.

Iqbal Soomro, brother of Senator Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro, criticized the Jewish lobby for deliberately publishing cartoons that had hurt feelings of Muslims all over the world.

He said that Jews were out to print caricatures of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) while General Musharraf was concerned only about the United States.

He demanded that diplomatic ties with the European countries where the cartoons were published be snapped.

Ali Gohar Bhatti and Khair Mohamemd Shaikh endorsed Iqbal Soomro’s views.

Nasiban Channa accused General Musharraf of siding the Jews only to save his chair while the Jews were killing Muslims.

This prompted Babu Sarwar Siyal from the pro-government benches to intervene and asked the critics of General Musharraf to resign from the council.

Iqbal Soomro stood up and said that for the sanctity and respect of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) he could resign.

He said that no Muslim could tolerate blasphemy.

Pro-PPP members following Mr Soomro boycotted the proceedings.

The council meeting reverberated with slogans of ‘go-go’ pointing towards pro-PPP members who raised slogans ‘go-Musharraf go’.

Convener Munwar Abro who was presiding over the session immediately prorogued it till Saturday.
