KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Saturday launched the Automated Fare Collection System in the Peoples Bus Service.

The launch ceremony of the new system was organised by the Sindh transport department at a local hotel.

The event showcased the features of the prepaid card, including contactless payment, reloadable balance and compatibility with diverse transit systems.

Designed to facilitate seamless, cashless transactions, the system is initially installed in buses on two key routes — from Model Colony to Tower and from Gulshan-i-Hadeed to Tower.

Officials said that this phased approach allows for a thorough evaluation before expanding to additional routes.

Speaking on the occasion, the CM expressed pride in spearheading the initiative and emphasised his government’s commitment to embracing technological advancements to meet the evolving needs of the populace.

“Today, I feel very happy. We are committed to our promise of public convenience, and we have moved the transport sector in the province towards digitalisation. The Sindh government has always been a leader in the welfare of the people, whether it’s in terms of digitalisation or creating a human-friendly environment, or in the energy sector,” he said.

“The introduction of the AFC system marks a significant advancement in our efforts. It will enhance the convenience and efficiency of transportation. We are committed to offering better facilities to the public. The minister of transport should continue to enhance the infrastructure of public transport, and the government of Sindh will extend all possible support in this regard,” he said.

He also emphasised the imminent completion of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line and the initiation of work on the Yellow Line.

Speaking at the event, Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said: “We are spearheading innovation in the transportation sector, and the launch of the Automated Fare Collection System in the Peoples Bus Service is a testament to this endeavour. Initially, the automatic fare collection system will be implemented on two routes with plans for expansion to other routes in the near future.”

Minister Memon said that numerous pioneering schemes had been initiated in Sindh, marking a first in the country’s history. Among those, the introduction of the Pink Bus Service for women and eco-friendly electric buses in Sindh were significant milestones.

He said that work on the BRT Red Line was halted during the caretaker government’s tenure. However, the PPP had resumed work despite inflation. “I have some great news for the people of Karachi. The work on the BRT Yellow Line has officially commenced. Our goal is to ensure accessible public transportation throughout the province,” he said.

Later, the CM inaugurated the automation system by boarding a Peoples Bus and using a card to pay the fare.

Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Information Secretary Nadeemur Rehman Memon, Sindh Mass Transit Authority chief Kamal Dayo and others were also present.
