DESPITE being a significant contributor to the national economy by way of its coal reserves, the Duki region in Balochistan has consistently failed to attract the attention of both the government and the mainstream media. The recent escalation in security threats targeting coal mines and workers has seriously affected life in the region.

On a daily basis, about 200 trucks laden with coal leave Duki for various destinations. Taxes and royalties from mining operations amount to a staggering figure, Rs7.95 million per day, Rs23.85 million per month and Rs286.2 million per year. Other than human life, this is what is at stake in Duki. The government is losing millions in revenue every day since Eidul Fitr, and the local people have been left to fend for themselves in the face of threats and unemployment.

It is imperative that immediate action is taken to address the crisis. High-level security meetings must be convened, involving local stakeholders as well, to formulate a comprehensive strategy for restoring peace and security in Duki. The safety and wellbeing of the people must be the top priority, and those responsible for perpetuating violence must be brought to justice.

Further, the national media also needs to wake up and play its professional role of highlighting what is wrong where.

The media;s silence on the issue only serves to perpetuate the suffering of the people. It is time for us to stand in solidarity with our fellow citizens, and demand justice and accountability.
