KARACHI: A suspected carjacker was shot dead in an alleged encounter with the Anti-Vehicles Lifting Cell (AVLC) in Ittehad Town on Wednesday.

The AVLC described him as the ringleader of a carjacking gang and a habitual criminal who had been arrested nine times in the past.

A police spokesperson said that an AVLC team during snap-checking at Zarbat Khan Chowk in Ittehad Town in the small hours of Wednesday morning indicated a car driver to stop. But instead of stopping the car, the suspect resorted to firing and in an exchange of gunfire, he was arrested in wounded condition.

The suspect died while being taken to a hospital. He was identified as Ayub Ibrahim. “He was arrested nine times in 17 cases,” said the spokesperson.

“He was the most wanted criminal involved in murder, police encounters, possession of illegal arms and car snatching incidents,” he added.

The official said that he had been involved in stealing cars from 2005 and was the ringleader of his gang. He used to sell snatched / stolen cars in Balochistan.

He could be seen in one of the CCTV footage of the stealing of a car recently in the metropolis. The car recovered from him was stolen from the jurisdiction of Shahrah-i- Noor Jehan. One pistol was also recovered from him.
