PESHAWAR: An assistant sub-inspector of the Peshawar police was martyred and a passerby injured when unknown persons opened fire at the former in the jurisdiction of Sarband police station on the outskirts of the provincial capital on Wednesday.

ASI Haji Akbar, posted at the Police Assistance Lines in Hayatabad, was on way to his office when he came under attack, the city police said in a statement.

It said a passerby, Mohammad Gul, was severely injured in the attack. An investigation team of the police recovered 10 empty shells of a pistol from the spot.

SSP operations Kashif Zulfiqar visited the spot and got briefed on the ongoing investigation into the attack. He said two suspected persons had been taken into custody.

Meanwhile, funeral of the martyred police official was held at the police headquarters. KP police chief Akhtar Hayat Khan, CCPO Mohammad Ashfaq and other senior police officials attended the funeral.
