ACCORDING to the recent meteorological forecasts, above-normal monsoon rains are expected in Karachi. This prediction necessitates immediate and thorough precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impact of heavy rains on our communities and infrastructure.
The memories of past monsoons still linger, with many areas experiencing severe flooding, extensive property damage and, regrettably, loss of life. The challenges posed by such extreme weather are not new, but we must recognise the amplified risks associated with the expected increase in rainfall this year.
The authorities must take proactive steps to ensure that the city’s infrastruc- ture can sustain the expected deluge. This includes clearing drainage systems, reinforcing embankments, and ensuring that emergency response teams are adequately equipped and prepared to deal with potential crises.
Additionally, mass public awareness campaigns should be initiated to educate the people on necessary precautions, such as securing their properties, having emergency supplies ready, and knowing evacuation routes. Community involvement and cooperation will be vital in reducing the risks and ensuring the safety of one and all.
All the relevant authorities should prioritise these preparations. By taking these steps now, we can minimise the adverse effects of the impending monsoon.
