ISLAMABAD: Capital police have launched an investigation against a British embassy official who hit a constable while violating traffic rules, sources said on Tuesday.

A police officer told Dawn that the office of the deputy inspector general of police (Operation) had sent a letter to the interior ministry requesting to approach the Foreign Office to collect details of the diplomat.

In a letter, the DIG sought details of her status whether she was a diplomat or a supporting staff at the UK High Commission. He also inquired whether she had diplomatic immunity or not.

The police public relations officer, Taqi Jawad, when contacted, confirmed that a letter had been sent to the Foreign office via the interior ministry. The police will initiate legal proceedings against the diplomat after receiving reply from the Foreign Office.

He further said a case had also been registered against the diplomat with Secretariat police station.

According to the FIR, a speeding car jumped the traffic signal and hit a motorcycle rider at Radio Pakistan Chowk. As a result the rider, who was later identified as a police official, sustained injuries, while his motorcycle broke into two, it added.

The vehicle driver introduced herself as a third secretary at the UK High Commission, the FIR added.
