Haj tragedy

Published June 26, 2024

THIS is with reference to the report ‘35 Pakistanis among 900 perished during Haj’ (June 20). Disturbing videos have been circulating on social media platforms that depict a horrifying scenario during Haj where elderly pilgrims succumbed to extreme heat and inadequate care, and their bodies were left unattended on the streets. This tragic mishandling by the relevant authorities in Saudi Arabia is not an isolated incident; it is a recurring issue that highlights gross negligence. The sacred pilgrimage demands meticulous planning and compassionate execution.

The hosts are obligated to provide the necessary infrastructure, medical facilities and support to the pilgrims. The annual cycle of mismanagement should not be allowed to continue. It is disheartening to observe the utter silence of Pakistan government. It is imperative that we muster the courage to voice our legitimate concerns. There is no doubt that all pilgrims should be able to perform their religious duties with dignity, and return home safely.
