ISLAMABAD: Police on Monday said that they arrested two suspects near Sector G-14 after an encounter in which a woman present in the vehicle of suspects was also injured. One of the suspects, however, managed to escape.

According to a statement by police posted on their ‘X’ account at 1:14am on June 30, the suspects fired at the police check post in G-13 when the police officials stopped their vehicle during routine checking.

The suspects present in the vehicle started firing and made an attempt to escape through the wrong side of the road, it added. Police officers remained unhurt due to protective gears, the post said, adding that a suspect sitting in the vehicle was injured and later shifted to hospital.

Over the incident, a case was registered at the Sumbal police station under sections 324, 186, 353, 170, 171, 279 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code along with Arms Ordinance 1965. The FIR registered at the Sumbal police station said that the incident took place at 12:20am on June 30 near the G-14 picket on Srinagar Highway. According to the FIR, the police got information about the activities of criminals who impersonated police officials to loot foreigners and locals in different areas of the capital.

It was further informed that the criminal gang left for the Islamabad airport for the criminal activity in a Honda Civic, bearing registration no. BHQ-936, and will return at any time, the FIR said, adding that “a special riding team was constituted comprising six personnel, including a woman”.

The special team reached the G-14 picket and informed six police officials deployed there about the tip-off and established more blockades there, said the FIR, adding that at 12:20am, a car appeared from the Tarnol side and personnel made an attempt to intercept it. However, the riders of the car in Islamabad wearing police uniforms started firing and also attempted to hit the personnel with their vehicle, it said, adding that the police officials remained unhurt.

The driver sped away the vehicle via one-way, it said, adding that in response the raiding team chased the vehicle. Due to road blockades, the driver turned the car but upon seeing the police in their pursuit, two persons disembarked the car and started firing at the law enforcers. As a result, a bullet hit a constable in the chest but due to the protective gear, he remained unhurt.

The suspects attempted to escape towards a nullah after the police fired back, however, they were apprehended and a handgun was recovered from one of them. The police also found a woman in injured condition from inside the vehicle whereas one suspect managed to escape under the cover of darkness while shooting. The injured woman was shifted to the police station.
