SAHIWAL: Five persons died when a speeding car hit a tractor-trolley from rear side near 100/9-L village on Sahiwal-Arifwala road on Tuesday.

According to eyewitnesses, the car hit the tractor-trolley so hard that the occupants, who were critically injured, got struck into its iron frame.

On being called by locals, Rescue 1122 teams arriving at the scene took out four bodies and a critically injured man from the car.

The injured man also succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to the Sahiwal Teaching Hospital (STH), they said.

Rescue 1122 ambulances shifted the bodies to the STH.

A team of Ghala Mandi police, Sahiwal, also reached the scene.

SHO Amir Farooq says that one of the deceased persons was identified as Ehsan, a resident of Faisalabad, adding that none of the others had their CNICs with them.

He says the police are trying to identify the other deceased persons, who are aged between 35 and 45 years.

SEARCH OPERATION: Rescue 1122 divers are continuing with the search operation to find a youth who had jumped into the Lower Bari Doab Canal, allegedly in a suicide bid, near Pull Bazar on Sunday last.

As per Rescue 1122 officials, the youth, later identified as Haseeb Hasan,a resident of Dubai Town, had jumped into the canal apparently to take his own life.

Quoting his neighbours, the officials say that Haseeb was in a financial crunch and allegedly took the extreme step after he received an inflated electricity bill.

District Emergency Officer Dr Abdullah told Dawn the search operation would continue on Wednesday (today).
