THIS is with reference to the editorial “‘Cruel jest’” (July 2) regarding the false promises and euphemisms presented by the federal finance minister during his press conference. The actual budget has turned out to be anything but fair. We, the ordinary citizens of this nation, are outraged and disheartened by the current state of affairs. As things stand, the heavy tax burden imposed upon us is unbearable, especially as we watch the privileged classes receive allowances and exemptions that only deepen the growing inequality in society.

Despite the grand announcements of increased taxes on real estate, these measures will primarily impact ordinary citizens. Meanwhile, there are sacred cows in the military as well as civil bureaucracies that will remain largely unaffected. As such, this selective taxation is unjust and will only widen the gap between the privileged few and the struggling majority. To add to the general sense of despair, the lawmakers have given themselves additional perks and privileges in stark contrast to the sacrifices they have been asking the masses to make.

Eventually, all these measures will undoubtedly exacerbate the brain drain phenomenon, as the country becomes even less conducive to retaining talent. In fact, our best and brightest will seek opportunities elsewhere, leaving the nation poorer in spirit and innovation. The primary reason for this exodus is not financial hardship alone; it is utter disillusionment with the existing system.
