MIAMI, (Florida), March 22: American Jamea Jackson created a little slice of tennis history on Wednesday after becoming the first player ever to use the ‘Hawkeye’ technology to challenge a line-call. Jackson used up one her two allowed challenges on the opening point of the second set of her first round match against compatriot Ashley Harkleroad, after seeing a forehand called out.

The challenge was immediately referred to another match official, who after studying replays flashed a close-up of Jackson’s shot and the word ‘OUT’ onto a large screen above the court to confirm the original call.

Line-call technology is being at the Miami tournament for the first time in the history of the WTA and ATP Tours.

The Hawk-Eye Officiating electronic line-calling technology will be implemented on the stadium court, with a system based on player challenges.

The system uses eight cameras linked to a computer, which can decide the position of the ball within four millimetres.

Each player will receive two challenges per set to review line calls. If he — or she — is correct, he will retain the same number of challenges, but if he is incorrect, one will be lost.

In addition, each player will receive one additional challenge in tiebreakers, but challenges may not be carried over from one set to another.—AFP
