IMAM Hussain holds a pivotal place in Islamic history and spirituality. His valour and commitment in Karbala on the 10th of Muharram clearly indicate that Hussain is not just the hero of Muslims but of all the people regardless of region, time and space.

Antoine Bara in his book Hussain in Christian Ideology eloquently states, “No battle in the modern and past history of mankind has earned more sympathy and admiration as well as provided more lessons than the martyrdom of Hussain in the battle of Karbala.” This profound observation underscores the immense moral and emotional impact of Hussain’s sacrifice.

Similarly, Edward Gibbon refers to Imam Hussain in his monumental work The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” thus: “In a distant age and climate, the tragic scene of the death of [Hussain] will awaken the sympathy of the coldest reader.” Gibbon’s acknowledgment highlights the universal and timeless impact of Imam Hussain’s martyrdom, evoking empathy and admiration across different eras and cultures.

These reflections by Bara and Gibbon are part of a broader recognition by many writers worldwide, emphasising that Imam Hussain’s stand against tyranny and his ultimate sacrifice resonate deeply with the principles of justice and humanity, making him a universal symbol of courage and resistance against oppression.

There are numerous other examples of writers and historians who have been moved by the events of Karbala, further attesting to Imam Hussain’s enduring legacy and his profound influence on global consciousness.

The oppression by his rivals more than 13 centuries ago is alive in contemporary times. The situations in Gaza and occupied Kashmir are clear examples. People are being threatened and subjected to gross inhumanity simply because of their faith. The utterly remarkable courage of Imam Hussain has remained a great source of inspiration for all the oppressed people across history. This status is truly eternal.
