An analysis of new UN satellite images has shown that 63 per cent of Gaza’s crop fields have experienced a “significant decline in health and density” due to razing, heavy vehicle activity, bombing, shelling and other conflict-related causes, Al Jazeera reports.

The new analysis from the United Nations Satellite Centre (Unosat) is based on images taken in June 2024 and shows a further decline from May 2024, when 57pc of Gaza’s crop fields were found to be damaged. It included an assessment of orchards and other trees, field crops and vegetables.

Unosat found there had been a particular decline in and around the Gaza and Deir el-Balah governorates compared with the preceding month, while northern Gaza had experienced the most severe decline overall with 75pc of its cropland damaged.
