PESHAWAR: The Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry has demanded the implementation of uniform axle load system across the country.

The demand was made through a resolution during a meeting of the SCCI’s executive committee held under the chair of chamber’ president Fuad Ishaq here on Monday, according to a statement.

The resolution, which was presented by the SCCI chief, also demanded that imposition of ‘illegal’ fines on transporters should be stopped immediately.

It furthermore asked for ending the alleged bribery and extortion at various checkpoints across the country.

According to the resolution, in case these demands of the transporters were not met, the SCCI would fully support the strike call given by the transporters across the country on July 25.

SCCI president Ejaz Khan Afridi, former president of FPCCI Ghazanfar Bilour, patron-in-chief Peshawar Goods Carriers’ Association Haji Sanaullah, chairman Haji Iftikhar Ahmed, deputy chairman Haji Ghaffar Khan, and others were in attendance.

Representatives of goods carriers’ association informed the meeting about the problems the transporters were facing.

On the occasion, Mr Ishaq assured the office-bearers of the association that efforts would be made to address the concerns regarding axle load in an effective manner.

The office-bearers of the association made it clear that the transporters would go on a strike across the country if these demands were not fulfilled by the government till July 25.

The transporters demanded of the government to implement a uniform axle weight system across the country, and avoid imposing ‘unjustified’ fines on them.

They said the motorway police should not issue challans without investigation, and that the power of challan should be withdrawn from the patrol police.
