BAHAWALPUR: A police party was allegedly attacked by a mob near Janowala Chowk in the limits of Nowshehra Jadid police station, about 40km from here, on Thursday, freeing a suspect in their custody.

According to police spokesperson, a police party on a tip-off conducted a raid on a premises near Janowala Chowk to arrest a suspect, Arshad, wanted in several cases of dacoity and theft.

The police party managed to arrest Arshad, but a mob comprising men carrying firearms and clubs, attacked the policemen and freed the suspect, who fled away with the attackers.

The police have launched a search for the attackers and the suspect.

TWO DROWN: Two young men drowned while swimming a canal at Tokharwali Pulli in Dunyapur in Lodhran district.

As per Rescue 1122, Akhtar Ali (20) and Ali Raza (17) were swimming in the canal when they disappeared in the deep water.On receipt of an emergency call, Rescue 1122 divers reached the scene and started searching for them.

After hours-long search, the divers retrieved the bodies of both young men from the canal and handed these over to their respective families.

SENTENCED: Kahror Pacca Additional Sessions Judge Umar Farooq Aawan handed down nine-year sentence to a woman drug trafficker, along with Rs80,000 fine.

According to the prosecution, the convict, Ghulam Zuhra, was arrested by Kahror Pacca Saddar police on Nov 28, 2023, with over one kilo charas. She was challaned under section 9-C of the PPC.

Meanwhile, as per Lodhran police spokesperson, 12 drug traffickers were arrested during a campaign and over three kilogram gram charas, besides illicit weapons, were recovered from their possession. They were lodged in police lock-ups.

PRE-ARREST BAIL: Justice Sadiq Mahmood Khurram of Bahawalpur Bench of the Lahore High Court on Thursday granted pre-arrest bail to a member of Ahmadiya community in a case of alleged slaughtering of a sacrificial animal on Eidul Azha.

As per the prosecution, Dr Tayyab, a member of Ahmadiya community, a resident of Khanpur, Rahim Yar Khan, had allegedly slaughtered an animal at his outhouse at Chak 45-P on Eidul Azha.

Khanpur Saddar police had registered a case (FIR No 1032/24) against the suspect under 298-C on the complaint of ASI Nasrullah Abbasi.

SHO BOOKED: The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) police station in Rahim Yar Khan booked a station house officer (SHO) in a bribe case.

As per the FIR (No 15/24), Kote Samabah police station SHO Muhammad Aftab had allegedly recieved Rs200,000 bribe from complainant Manzoor Ahmed for discharging his son, Naeem, in a case.

It says that Manzoor filed a bribery complaint with the ACE against the SHO, who again booked his son in a case and forced the complainant to withdraw the complaint.

The complainant again moved the ACE, and after a through investigation a case was registered against the SHO, who is yet to be arrested.
