KARACHI: Gas supply to nearly half of the city will remain suspended on Sunday (today) for 24 hours as the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) connects a 31-km-long transmission line to its system.

A spokesman for the gas utility said that the gas supply would be shut off from 5am on Sunday to 5am on Monday to connect the pipeline to the gas transmission and distribution system.

According to the spokesperson, all sectors of Surjani Town, North Karachi, Manghopir Town, Qasba and Orangi Town, all blocks of North Nazimabad, Federal B Area, Gulberg, Buffer Zone, SITE Industrial Area, Baldia Town, Ittehad Town, Gulshan-i-Maymar, Ahsanabad, Janjal Goth, and Superhighway and surrounding areas will be affected by the shutdown.

He advised customers in the affected areas to stock up on alternative fuel during this temporary shutdown to avoid any inconvenience.

He added that the gas utility team was making all-out efforts for the restoration of gas supply in the affected areas as soon as possible.

The SSGC apologised for the inconvenience caused to its customers due to this “brief” outage, he added.

He said that the SSGC would be undertaking hook-ups of a 24-inch diameter pipeline and that the gas supply would be shut down temporarily to carry out this vital task.

The spokesman added that the gas utility had laid down the dedicated pipeline at an investment of Rs3.86 billion, aiming to supply gas at the required high pressure to industrial zones while continuing to supply fuel at low pressure to residential and commercial areas in the region.

“The project will segregate the low-pressure domestic and commercial consumers from high-pressure industrial consumers in SITE and Hub Industrial Areas,” it added.
