GUJRAT: At least one person died and five others were injured in two roof collapse incidents caused by the heavy rain in the district on Sunday morning.

In the first incident, the roof of a house caved in at Kathala village early in the day, resulting in death of an elderly woman, Ghulam Zahra, while two other members of his family, Tanveer (30) and Rehana Kausar (40), were injured.

Similarly, in another rain-related incident, the roof of a house collapsed at Shahabdiwal village on Dinga Road. As a result, Manzoor Ahmed (68) and his 60-year-old wife (name could not be confirmed) were injured.

Those injured in both incidents were shifted tothe Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital (ABSTH) by Rescue 1122 teams, where their condition is said to be out of danger.

Meanwhile, the rainwater entered a housenear Jail Chowk after its boundary wall collapsed.

Rescue 1122 officials say that at least four members of the family residing in the house, including Usman Saeed (60), his wife and their two sons, were trapped there.

A Rescue 1122 team reaching the house, that was at least five feet below the road level, used a fire engine to evacuate the stranded family and shifted it to the house of their relatives in Shadman Colony.

The rainwater submerged the city roads turning them into no-go areas, disrupting routine life for the second consecutive day.

The tracks at Gujrat railway station were also inundated by rainwater which also entered ABSTH, causing problems for patients and their attendants.

Gujrat Deputy Commissioner Safdar Virk told Dawn that the officials of administration were in the field to tackle the urban flooding and supervising drainage work at the disposal stations. He added that the situation worsened due to record-breaking rains.
