KARACHI: Two division benches of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar, have decided over 270 cases during the past three weeks in Karachi.
According to weekly reports, 376 cases were fixed for hearing before these benches at the apex court’s Karachi registry from July 15 to Aug 2, out of which 271 cases have met the ends of justice.
A bench comprising Justice Mazhar and Justice Irfan Saadat Khan heard 80 cases from July 15 to July 19 and disposed of 58 cases.
Similarly, the same bench took up 110 cases for hearing from July 22 to July 26 and decided 71 cases.
Another two-judge bench comprising Justice Mazhar and Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi heard 186 cases and 142 of them have been decided during this week (July 29 to Aug 2).
At present, over 59,400 cases are pending before the apex court and besides its sanctioned strength of 17 permanent judges, two as ad hoc judges have also been appointed apparently due to huge backlog of cases at the top court of the country.
